The Money Shot has come to a standstill and Lion’s Gate is optioning the property from me as they fell there will be a window open for it. The two markets where it most belonged HBO and SHOWTIME has other projects in the same genre. 2008 has been an enormous education and in the end I always remember what Garry Marshall said in his book. "Always have your next idea ready to go"
Offer is Compromise continues to take shape and my goal is to shoot in the spring. I have been meeting with agents at ICM, Endeavor, Paradigm, William Morris and others in both Los Angeles and New York listening to their pitches on the their clients and talking about the movie.
Everything that is happening in my professional life today is a product of having made a business plan in 2002 and continuing to update it. I teach it because I believe in it and use it as one of my most important tools.

Greetings Fellow Travelers,
After riding the waves of Hollywood on my project The Money Shot I have one pitch left at FX. We are waiting word from STARZ and SPIKE. We pitched all the networks. They love the show...won't touch the world. Television is paid for by large corporations that have rules and the rules get very clear when it comes to sex...especially sex for money. So the jury is still out and there are still more options. Lion's Gate is scratching their heads over the show they thought was a slam dunk. Welcome to Hollywood, there are no guarantees.
Offer in Compromise is out in the breakdowns as move forward attaching two more stars with the help of Kerry Barden (The Visitor, Pineapple Express.)
Teaching the Business Plan workshop continues to flourish and I am deeply grateful for it's ability to inspire and re-energizing me.

Greetings Fellow Travelers,
How are your projects progressing? Stalled? Stuck? Feeling overwhelmed? One of my students really summed this up. "If you are procrastinating, the job is too big."
In my own life and career this is something I come up against this on a daily basis. I can't carry a pallet of bricks up six flights of stairs, but I can move them all ONE BRICK AT A TIME.
Come check out BUSINESS PLANS FOR ARTSTS AND OTHERS.

THE BUSINESS PLAN AT WORK IN MY LIFE:
The Money Shot, my project at Lion's Gate with Jonathan Prince (THE CLEANER) and Adam Glass, is out to the buyers, with meetings now set at, HBO, SHOWTIME, FX, ABC, and CBS. Offer In Compromise with French Stewart and Katherine LaNassa is now in pre-production with casting director Kerry Barden and Producer Tani Cohen.
Last week I attended a DGA screening for THE STONE ANGEL starring Ellen Burstyn.
I was brought in to coach to Christine Horne who played the younger Ellen character. I worked alongside Kari Skogland, (above) who utilized me and graciously referred to me as "her right hand." This film helped to create a great niche area for me as a coach/consultant to actors and directors sending me off to work with Hilary Duff and Nancy Bardawill on GRETA, which is soon to be released.

THE BUSINESS PLAN AT WORK
"I spent an incredible two weeks teaching in Delhi at the Asian Academy of Film and Television. I was asked back for next January and asked to be a member of the overseas faculty.
Meetings are being set for The Money Shot, with myself, Jonathan Prince(Co-Ep with me) and Adam Glass going out to the buyers in the next month.
Offer in Compromise with French Stewart, Katherine LaNassa now officially has Kerry Barden signed on as Casting Director. Producer Tani Cohen and I are thrilled to have him in this partnership.

Yep, that's me at the Taj Mahal. No Photoshop. The Business Plan is at work doing it's magic. I spent an incredible two weeks teaching in Delhi at www.aaft.com. I was asked back for next January and asked to be on the advisory board.
I am working with Jonathan Prince(Co-Ep with me) and Adam Glass going over the pitch for the The Money Shot.
We are in search of the right casting director to help attached the other leads for Offer in Compromise with French Stewart, Katherine LaNassa and wonderful group of other actors you'll know by name starts principal photography in October.

Hello Wonderful Actors,
I am here in Delhi, India teaching an acting syllabus to the students of AAFT. I have wanted to see and work in India for quite some time. While I was coaching Hilary Duff on the movie GRETA, I had Googled film schools in India, and the top search was AAFT. Mr. Sandeep Marwah graciously extended an invitation to me to come to teach for two weeks.
It has been an extraordinary time both as a visitor to a amazing country and as a teacher. Teaching in English and Hindi, it's easy to see that the language of acting is universal. That the core parts of the process for actor, reaches beyond the words. I look forward to this ongoing partnership. Check them out at www.aaft.com
Namaste,
Valerie

The Money Shot moves on. Co-executive producer, Jonathan Prince has now brought in well know writer Adam Glass to pen the pilot.
The movie AS IS, now has a new title. OFFER IN COMPROMISE. The production will now start French Stewart and Katherine LaNassa. The feed back on the script has been amazing and we hope to attach a great known independent film casting director to help put together the package for financing.
Business Plans for Artists and Others continues now with a monthly workshop. The workshop now included many different kinds of professionals including musicians, a security advisors, photographers as well as a few therapists,

Calling all Artists!
The more I teach Business Plans for Artists and Others the more I learn about the process. Like a tap dance teacher a few lessons in front of the students I am always updating my plan now and things keep happening. For example, I had several things on my business plan as a Actor-Writer-Director
1. Find a young male writing partner to increase marketability.
2. Direct an original project, a low budget film that I develop that I am passionate about.
3.Actively pursue the niche area of coaching directors before and during the film making process.
I am in development now for AS IS, a low budget feature that I will try and get produced in the next year. It was written by Dylan Otto, 27 . We have now worked together refining the draft for the last year. Dylan has a agreed to be my partner on several future projects
I just got back from five weeks work in Ocean Grove, New Jersey with Ellen Burstyn, Hilary Duff and Michael Murphy and lovely director Nancy Bardawill. Nancy is a big music-video director new to narrative.
At least 65% of what has been in my overall plans has been realized within a year or two and more importantly it became clear to see what needed to be taken off my immediate goals for now so time could be spent in more productive places.
It works.
While I was in Ocean Grove I decided that it was important to me to fulfill some life goals as well. I have dreamed of going to India for many years. One night after shooting until 4am I Googled film schools in India. I found the most popular search for film schools, the Asian Academy of Film and Television and emailed them offering to teach a short program there.
Keep your fingers crossed.
January 2007
For those of you who aren't on my mailing list. I have started to teach a workshop called Business Plans for Artists and Others. Here is a little blurb on that.
In January of 2002 I knew that I needed to begin to create a business outlook and strategy for my work as a director, actor, writer and teacher. I had the great good fortune to have had a large dot com company belly up leaving is C.F.O Dan Snyder available to become my mentor in this area. Over a three-week period I learned how to create business plans the Captain Dan way. Since that time they have become an integral part of my business process and always seem to spark movement in anything I am doing when I create new ones or update previous ones. So I invite you to take a look at this incredible tool.
The business plan that I created had generated many things. I have carved a niche for myself a on set coach and a master teacher.
I have sold a project called The Money Shot at Lion’s Gate Television partnered with Jonathan Prince(CANE, AMERICAN DREAMS). The project is based on life stories of mine during a 5 years stint as a director in a crazy part of the industry.. I have also written three moives one of which is under option.
Business Plans are not just that paper you give to perspective investors. They are powerful outlines that enable you to bring any idea from inception to fruition
So check out the workshops tab and come join us for a day of hard work that seems to produce incredible results.
November 2006
Hello Wonderful Actors,
I am in Paris, France where I
have created MASTER CLASS with my great friend Kat DeBlois. Kat and
I met when we were both working on Broadway in 1980. 27 years later
Kat the Vice President of Shows for Euro Disney. MASTER
CLASS is writing, directing and acting techniques for
the creative show team at Euro Disney. Group members who’s job it
is to write and direct their live shows, parades and events for the
Disney park focus on creating a specific form for the story process
while incorporating the basic tenets of screen / playwriting. Taking
the Disney "box" and utilizing its contents to the fullest
extent while working with performers bilingually (French/English) in
all areas of their shows. It's been amazing and illuminating.
Looking the core of what makes a piece of art work or not regardless
of language. This has been a particularly interesting experience in
comedy and what makes things universally funny. The workshop
us being made into a DVD for the other Disney parks all over the
world.
September 2006
Hello Wonderful Actors,
I am writing to you from
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I am here coaching a
lovely 24 year old actress in a movie called The Stone
Angel. She is playing Ellen Burstyn's Character from 15-42 though
the years 1936-1962. Needless to say its an enormous
undertaking so they called me in to coach. For those
of you who have studied with me I am doing much of
the same work with her that I have done with you. In
addition, this is one of her first jobs on film. She is a
skilled theater actress and is now bridging this work to film.
It has been an exciting process to give her the tools to do her
best work in this new environment. It's fitting then
that I come directly to Maine to do a two wholeacting technique workshops and an On Camera 2 Day Workshop - see below
for details. Feel free to write to me with any questions.
August 2006
Dear Wonderful Actors,
I had to leave Los Angeles very quickly two weeks ago to take what has proved to be a wonderful project coaching a talented young actress playing the young Ellen Burstyn (he character) in a film called The Stone Angel. This also stars Kevin Zegers (Transamerica), Aaron Ashmore(Smallville/Veronica Mars), and Cole Hauser(The Break Up). I've been working a bit with all of them and that has been a treat.
Sitting on the set I had time to think about what I wanted to do with the Monday night class.
I have enjoyed teaching it so much. But my favorite form of teaching is the Intensive form. One day or two days. All day. But I also really saw the value of everyone working with the casting directors in the night classes. To that end here is the new form for Wholeacting - Los Angeles
The last Saturday of ever month I will give
a 10 hour intensive. (see description below) The Monday night
that follows that will be the casting director night.

THE SONS OF LINCOLN by
Larry Gold-The Lillian Theater
with Glynn Turman, Chadd
Allen, Lawrence Monoson, Joel Polis and Bill Faggerbakke.
- -Larry Gold's play, "The Sons of Lincoln," is a
bizarre conglomeration of screechy racist rants and
small-scale
power struggles. The production at the
Lillian Theater gathers enough steam to become theatrically
exciting,
not so much because of the play, which remains
undisciplined if occasionally provocative, but due to
Valerie Landsburg's vibrant direction of an exciting,
explosive cast. Landsburg keeps it moving at a rapid-fire
pace.
Above all, what makes this unpleasant material
watchable is the acting, which has a constant energy
reminiscent of the style of Chicago's Steppenwolf
company. -Daily Variety
